Think Beyond Red Roses & Heart-Shaped Chocolates This Valentine's Day
Charities are asking people in the South East 'what"s in your heart?' in an alternative Valentine's message for lovebirds and singletons alike
As part of a national campaign encouraging people to donate time or money to causes they care about, the National Council for Voluntary Organisations is asking people to think beyond red roses and heart-shaped chocolates this Valentine's Day.
Stuart Etherington, chief executive of NCVO, said: "We are asking people in the South East to have an alternative Valentine's Day by thinking about what causes are in their heart and doing something to help them.
"Charities make a vital contribution to our communities and donations – in time or money – are crucial to their success.
"If everyone in Britain gave just £1 more a week, we'd raise an extra £3.1bn for good causes while increasing volunteer numbers means we could help thousands more people.
It doesn't matter if you are in or out of love, this Valentine's message is for everyone."
Actress Kate Winslet and the Prime Minister have publicly backed NCVO's 'What Do You Believe In?' campaign, which launched in December, and it is backed by a string of UK charities.
Volunteering includes all kinds of activities from helping out at a one-off event through to a regular commitment manning telephone helplines, working in charity shops or helping run clubs such as Scouts and Guides.
